Letter from President Reoch about Thrangu Rinpoche's community
Dear Shambhala Sangha,
I am writing to you about a very dear and long-standing friend of our mandala, and offering a way you can support his project for a new meditation centre.
Most of us have at one time or another received teachings from the Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, and many have a deep connection to him. He and Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche were dear friends and vajra brothers from a young age in Tibet, took monastic vows at the same time and studied together.
Thrangu Rinpoche was among the earliest Tibetan lamas to visit and teach in our community, and he did so frequently at the invitation of the Vidyadhara. In the early 80s, Trungpa Rinpoche requested Thrangu Rinpoche to assume the position of abbot at Gampo Abbey, and he has guided Shambhala monastic development ever since. He established the first three-year-retreat program conducted entirely in English, and it was under his direction that the Nalanda Translation Committee completed the translation of all the required texts and commentaries. Thrangu Rinpoche has conferred many teachings and empowerments for the retreatants and residents of Gampo Abbey over the past 20 years.
In 2002 Thrangu Rinpoche initiated a three-stage building project in Crestone, Colorado, on 35 acres of land granted to him. The first stage was completed in 2005, and the second phase -- the building of the shrine room -- has now begun.
The budget for this second phase of the project is $410,000 US. Of this, $166,000 has been raised as of late 2008.
Please make as generous a contribution to the building of this dharma site as you possibly can, especially bearing in mind the wealth of teachings that Thrangu Rinpoche has offered to our community over these many years. You can make your offering by clicking here.
You can find out more about the retreat centre by clicking here and here, and about Thrangu Rinpoche's dharma activities by clicking here.
Lady Diana Mukpo has asked that the Shambhala community to lend its support for this project, in recognition of Thrangu Rinpoche's thirty years of unceasing kindness and friendship for Shambhala. In support of that aspiration, I am sending you this letter with the profound wish that your own personal connection with Thrangu Rinpoche will lead you to make as generous as possible an offering to the completion of his shrine room.
With every best wish,
Richard
