Touching the Earth posting for the Mandala Council
July 21, 2009
Dear members of the Sakyongs Council and Mandala Council,
A cheerful summer to you! This spring and summer have been exciting times for environmental action within the Shambhala sangha. The Sakyong, Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche offered his mindful instructions on Protecting the Earth in support of Earth Day 2009 and in July urged sangha members to sign the Buddhist Declaration on Climate Change.
Along with the Sakyong's encouragement, the Touching the Earth working group launched the 2009 Shambhala Green Commitment initiative. We have been delighted so far at the positive actions centers are taking throughout the world and eagerly await responses from the remainder of the mandala.
To join in this collective commitment, each center is invited to make five commitments to improve its environmental performance over the next year. These activities can be large or small and can affect any aspect of your center, from energy efficiency to recycling and reuse. You can read the initial request within the 2009 Shambhala Green Commitment.
All activities will be posted on the Touching the Earth webpage so that centers around the world can learn from what others are doing. On Earth Day 2010 we will post an update from all participating centers about their success at fulfilling their 2009 Shambhala Green Commitment.
If you haven't already, please encourage your Touching the Earth liaison to send your five green commitments to touchingearth@gmail.com by 1 September 2009.
Yours in Great Eastern Sun Vision,
Touching the Earth Working Group
